Each of my students receives a well rounded musical education
No matter what their goals, I focus on giving students a thorough education in core musical concepts such as rhythm, harmony, melody, musical form and dynamics.
My lessons are tailored individually to each student
I work at a pace that is appropriate for each student. Except for young children and complete beginners, I largely use music that is chosen by the student so that they will be more involved in their experience. I help the student recognize their strengths and weaknesses, and then learn to create realistic short and long term goals to guide their progress. I believe that by adjusting their approach over time and learning to develop efficient strategies towards achieving their goals, students not only become solid musicians, but also more effective people in their daily lives.
I believe that young students should be allowed to explore their interests
Pre-teens and early adolescents have busier schedules than many adults these days. Rather than add to their stresses, I try to guide younger students to as many different musical ideas and experiences as possible so they can learn to associate positive feelings of discovery and achievement through studying music.
I use music technology extensively in lessons
There are a plethora of musical resources and technologies available in the digital realm today. I use play-along cd's, websites, and music notation and recording programs to enhance every area of our lessons.
Reading music is mandatory
All of my students are required to learn basic music notation, but how deeply we get into reading depends on the goals of the student.
I do not hold student recitals
But I am open to scheduling private recitals at the request of the student/family.
